Dear Coaches,

Welcome back to Courtside with Mental Training Plan, brought to you in partnership with the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA). We are thrilled to provide you with another monthly resource designed to strengthen your athletes' mental game and help them manage pressure when the stakes are high.

This Month’s Resource: Breathing and Forced Muscular Relaxation

In high-pressure moments, it’s common for athletes to feel their bodies tense up or their heart rates spike, making it harder to perform at their best. This month, we’re focusing on two techniques—breathing and forced muscular relaxation—that will help your athletes take control of their physical responses and perform with confidence under pressure.

Learning how to control their breathing and release tension in their muscles gives athletes the tools to remain calm, composed, and focused, even in the most intense situations.

  1. Dive into the Resource:

Here is this month’s resource to help your athletes learn and practice these essential techniques for handling high-pressure moments on the court:

  2. Put it to work:

Find creative ways to practice controlling your heart rate. You can have races during practice, strap on an iWatch and see how quickly you can get your heart rate above a certain number and below a certain number. Have a relay with your entire team in the weight room, divide into multiple teams and have a race to get your heart rate above a certain number and then back below a certain number. Help your players gain confidence that they can control their body physically. Watch an NBA game together and count how many times you see players doing breathing exercises at the free throw line.

  3. Have a Question?

If you have any questions you’d like addressed in future videos or want to explore this topic further, don’t hesitate to reach out!
